Family support

How Families Can Support a Parent From Somewhere Else

You can help a parent with technology from another state. You cannot secretly operate their phone, and you should not have to be the only person they can call.

Distance makes families invent workarounds: shared passwords in a group text, remote-access software left running, or a standing rule that nothing gets clicked until you are free. Those workarounds fray. A better plan is one task at a time, a number they can call without you, and a written yes about who else may help.

RingMyTech provides Technology Wellness support across the United States. The parent is the member and the decision maker. This page extends helping an aging parent with technology and family technology support.

Start with one task they asked for

Pick something they already want: photos of a grandchild, a pharmacy refill page, or a video call on Sunday. Book a time when they can be at the device. Narrate the next tap. Let them do the last one. Stop when it works. Send the three steps in a form they can find later, on paper or in a note they agreed to keep.

Do not begin with a new phone, a new email address, and a new banking app in the same week. That stack creates the next emergency.

Use remote help they can see

If seeing the screen would help, explain that before anyone connects. They should be able to watch the pointer and end the session. RingMyTech connects only after the member requests help and gives permission. Leave the software closed when the call is over.

A stranger's remote-access request is a different event. If a pop-up or a caller reached them first, use the seven checks and remote-access scams. Your parent should know that "do not tell your family" is the moment to call you.

Leave a path that does not depend on your schedule

Put (888) 981-TECH on paper beside the computer and save it in the phone under the name RingMyTech. A saved contact is safer than a link in a text they might confuse with a scam. They should be able to call on a day you are in a meeting.

If they want you to know that a request was made, Care Circle lets an authorized family contact stay informed within the limits they set. They open the member entry from Open Care Circle. You do not create a secret login.

Passwords, money, and medical accounts

Help them build a password system they control. The steps are on passwords for aging parents. Do not ask them to read bank passwords into a family group text. For a clinic visit, use telehealth safety. RingMyTech does not give medical, legal, tax, or financial advice.

If they already sent money to a scam, switch to what to do after sending money the same day. Prevention can wait until the report is made.

Help a parent with technology

You can make the first call together. After that, your parent should have a direct way to get help, including Care Circle if they want family involved.
