Banks, email companies, and many medical portals send these codes by text, email, or an app. The extra step stops some strangers who have only a password. It does not help if the stranger is on the phone coaching you to read the number.
RingMyTech can sit with you while you turn the feature on and while you use a code for a login you started. We will not ask you to read a code to us so that we can type it. The family version of this problem is on helping a parent with passwords.
When a code is legitimate
You went to the bank, the email site, or the clinic by a bookmark or an address you typed. The site says it sent a code. The text arrives. You type the code into that same site. Then you are in. That is the whole feature.
The code expires quickly. If it fails, request a new one from the site you already have open. Do not switch to a link in a different text while you are halfway through.
When a code is a trap
A caller says they are the bank, the technology company, or RingMyTech, and asks you to read the code "to confirm your identity" or "to stop a charge." Hang up. That code would let them in. Call the company back on a number you look up yourself.
The same trap arrives as a text that says "if you did not request this code, call this number." You may not have requested it because a stranger did. Do not call the number in that text. If you are worried, open the account from your own bookmark and look, or call the number on your card.
Set it up with a phone you still have
Turn on two-factor authentication from inside the account, while you are already signed in through a bookmark. Choose the phone you answer. If you change phone numbers later, update the account before you give the old number away. Write down that the feature is on, in the same password notebook, without writing down a live code. Codes are temporary.
If the account offers backup codes, store them with the password notebook in the house. They are as sensitive as the password. They are also how you get back in if the phone is lost.
How a family can help
Practice once on a low-stakes account. Let your parent read the code and type it. Do not store their codes in your own texts as the permanent system. If they want you informed when something goes wrong, use Care Circle for technology help, and use the bank's own authorized-user process for the bank. Those are different permissions.
